The Elixir of long life

From time immemorial, the hunt for discovering the elixir of life is known. People fear death, rather; love to remain immortal. A panacea which can cure all diseases, a capsule which is capable to give you eternal life; 'the elixir' or 'the philosopher's stone' has been the most coveted one by the 'Alchemist' in various ages and cultures. No one has ever succeeded in the mission of identifying or preparing this 'elixir'.

Elixirs of life have assumed many forms throughout history, but in most legends, they take the form of food or drink that grants the consumer immortal life.

Relevance of Elixir in Antediluvian India?

E

arly cultures in India practiced ayurvedic rasayana, an early version of alchemy. Mercury and amla were used to promote longevity of life. Other tales from ancient Indian folklore speak of soma, a fermented drink that was said to grant the drinker immortality. The recipe has been lost to time, but historians believe it may have been made with the fermented milky sap of Asclepias acida, a kind of milkweed. Ancient Indian alchemy may have sought a more spiritual goal than our modern ideas of immortality. Indian traditions at least did not necessarily mean keeping one's body alive forever. Rather, it was about attaining a state of spiritual liberation or enlightenment (moksha) without having to die. But the body would get transformed and the outer layers of gross matter sheds away.

What should be the Elixirs of our life?

As long as death exists, the fascination of the human being to discover the elixir cannot stop. And if ever there were the ELIXIRS of LIFE, then those will be the NUTRITIONAL DIET, EXERCISE and ORGAN DONATION.

NUTRITIONAL DIET

Eat well, Live well!!” This should be the policy of every individual to live long and healthy life.

We all have busy schedules in our daily life. So, finding time to eat a nutritionally balanced diet can be an impediment. So, we often have a tilt towards junk foods which may not be always packed with the nutrients that our body requires.

Fitness of a body reflects by regular exercise along with healthy diet. We often spend a lot of time in grooming ourselves. But the real beauty reflects from inside. You can’t hide your reality. Because it all depends on what and how much nutrients are there in your daily diet. The food we eat, the nutrition we intake plays essential role in how we look and feel. Making a healthy eating habit is an important factor for a healthier and happier life-style.

READY, SET, EXERCISE!!

"Wellbeing and movement create strength and power in body, mind and spirit".

When we’re young, exercise often comes naturally. Most kids happily run around all day without even thinking about it. As we get older, though, something changes. We become busier with work, social obligations and family pressures, and fitness suffers as a result. But in a society, that’s seemingly obsessed with youthfulness, medical science shows it is exercise that can keep us young – no magic pills or potions required. We have to understand which type of exercise to do for ourself - cardiovascular aerobic exercise, strength or resistance exercise, flexibility and balance exercise.

If we really want to live healthy and long life, then we should not compromise on regular exercise. And very importantly there is no tomorrow to start exercise. At least walk for 10,000 steps or daily exercise for an hour. Regular exercises have enormous health benefits, especially for a good well-being. It will keep you away from diseases and manage your physical and mental stress. Exercise releases brain hormones like endorphins, which create feelings of happiness. It can greatly save you from depression, prevent you from aging fast and degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's. Regular physical activity boosts memory and ability to learn new things.

What’s next?

There is no magic wagon to get rid of the vicious cycle of the unhealthy and unfit lifestyle. As everything is human-induced, solutions must come from our side as well. A paradigm shift in attitude and cultivating health consciousness is the need of the hour.

A famous quote “It’s never too late to change old habits” by Florence Griffith Joyner. The kick should be from inside. As, we know finding motivation to stick to our diet goals isn’t easy. But it is vital for our life. While we are trying to avoid junk food or wake up early in the morning for our daily workouts, we should stay positive, feel good and remember to celebrate small victories that can make all the difference.  Because today only is the chance to get it right.

Understand what our body needs for a long life - a mythological elixir or a healthy and fit lifestyle. Let us eat healthily, walk an extra mile and think positively. This is the "real" elixir of life.

Apart from this, we all can become an elixir of life for others. Many of us believe that we should make ourselves useful and help people who are less fortunate than we are. Organ donation gives us the opportunity to be of use and help people even after we are not around anymore. Donating an organ after death is more than just the physical act of giving a part of your body that is of no use to you anymore. It is about celebrating our lives!

Have you ever wondered that your being healthy can actually make someone else’s health better!!

O

rgan Donation is one such phenomena which actually proves the above statement. If you remain fit then your organ remains fit which implies your Donation can make Nine people healthy; a way to get back to their lives. An opportunity to spent some more time with their dear ones. It is a proven fact, that western citizens are more open minded as compared to our people, but then effort and determination of brave hearts (doctors and donors) are two among many such factors which are helping us to spread the awareness about Organ Donation.

Many NGOs had taken the initiative of awareness for the same. One such initiative is taken by Bhopal Organ Donation Society.

The Bhopal Organ Donation Society is a non- profit. Non-Governmental Organization registered under M.P. Society registration Act, 1973, to promote organ Donation in Bhopal by like-minded and concerned medical and non- medical experts committed to increase the reach of Transplantation of Human Organs Act. This society is chaired by District collector Shri Nishant Warwade and consists of Government officials and renowned doctors as its members. It focuses on ensuring that every person suffering from end stage organ failure should be provided with GIFT OF LIFE through a life-saving organ. The society has accomplished many objectives, viz;

·     Coordinating between the organ donors / concerned agencies/medical Institutions

·   Networking and coordinating with other organ procuring Institutions around the country.

There are many facts that we should know and there are many myths that one should be beware off. There are some really good NGO’s working out there in our country but that’s not enough. As a citizen we have some responsibilities towards our fellow beings, today India ranks second to have done the largest Organ Transplantation but this is a long-run. Still there are hurdles which we need to overcome; which is only possible if we remain fit i.e., our organs remain fit and all-in-all making a person who requires a transplantation fit. So, let’s become an elixir of life- a gift of life- by pledging our organs. Let’s take a step towards better and prosperous society.
